Hans wrote to Bicycle and Push Carts for Women Smallholder Farmers in Ghana:
Dear Richard,
I see you go for the gap in the market. This is a project worth to support. Perhaps it is to consider, for reasons of creating ownership for the beneficiaries, to ask a small contribution for the carts. I think by using these carts people can uplift their income and then is is't unreasonable to ask this contribution.

Dear Hans,
Thank you for your note. Your points are insightful but you are missing a bigger picture.
1) Push and bicycle carts are not that all common in Ghana (compared to malawi for example). This would be one of the first experiments to formalize and generalize their use in Ghanaian villages.
Like everyone and more so poor people, they see the value but they would not want to invest (as we understood from the field) given putting this money might mean forbidding something else such as fertilizer or school fees and an end-result which for them is till not guaranteed.
2) The donations we want to raise will go into a revolving loan fund. It means it will allow us to manufacture the carts and give them on credit to farmers. When they repay, we will furnish new carts for another 40 women farmers and it would roll on. This approach will benefit far more farmers (PS we've thought of micro finance loans but they charge an outrageous 40% with a grace period of just 1 month)
Happy if you could spread the word
Warmly,
Richard

Dear Richard,
Thanks for your reaction and explanation. I think we are on the same route. With point 2 you made clear for me in what way you want to operate. Wish you a lot of succes! It is worth funding this project.

Dear Mathiu,
This is a very good project that makes lives in the future more sustainable. From a point of view of ownership I think it might be worth to think about asking a small contribution of the recieving families for the solar kits. I know that might be difficult but we have experienced that this has a posotive impact on the recieving families. On the other hand , they become in the near future more income as spin off. Just think about it.
