1. WHO CAN JOIN THE 1%CLUB?

Anyone can join. Individuals, associations, schools, foundations and businesses. Everybody can contribute to implementing structural solutions to poverty.

3. DO YOU CHECK WHETHER A 1%MEMBER REALLY DONATES 1% OF HIS/HER INCOME?

Haha, no of course not. 1% is a ballpark figure. The idea is that you can make a major contribution to solving poverty issues with a very small input of your time, knowledge, and income.

4. HOW DO I KNOW EXACTLY WHICH PROJECTS I HAVE SUPPORTED?

Your one-off donations are immediately visible on your profile page. Your monthly donations will be visible from the following month. Other memberscan only see which projects you support, not how much you donated.  You however, can see an exact overview of your donations by clicking on the donation report in your profile.

5. CAN I ALSO BECOME AN ANONYMOUS 1%MEMBER?

Yep, no problem! Use a pseudonym or your alter ego to subscribe. See the example of Zorro. Yet, your data are visible to 1%CLUB, but, of course, we guarantee the privacy of your data.

6. HOW DO I DONATE 1% OF MY TIME OR KNOWLEDGE?

Whether you wish to contribute to projects or start your own project: 1%SKILLS is the way to get started. The 1%MEMBERS' database is a pool of skilled and motivated people who want to share their expertise, time, and knowledge to make projects work. Search the database for people with desired expertise or see which projects could profit from your knowledge.

7. WHEN WILL I SEE MY DONATIONS ON THE SITE?

One-off donations are directly visible, both on the project page and on your own page. Monthly donations are visible in your profile and on the corresponding project page from the end of each month.

8. WHAT IF I DON’T FEEL LIKE CHOOSING NEW PROJECTS AGAIN AND AGAIN?

On your profile page you can choose the “GIVE 1%” option. After you have decided how much money you wish to spend on fighting poverty, choose the “divide automatically” option. Your contribution will be divided amongst the three most popular projects. The popularity of a project is determined by the amount of 1%MEMBERS who support it, and the amount of money that a project has accumulated. You can find the three most popular projects on the project page.

9. HOW DO I TRANSFER MONEY?

All monies are transferred online. You can choose a one-off or monthly donation. One-off donations can be done via iDEAL, Credit Card or one-time authorization. One-off donations are deducted from your account within a couple of working days. Monthly donations are deducted from your account at the beginning of every month. You can terminate donations at all times.

10. IS MY MONEY TRANSFERRED DIRECTLY TO THE PROJECT OF MY CHOICE?

Your money is transferred to the bank account of 1%CLUB. The project owner can see your donation immediately on his/her page. All donated funds are transferred to the respective projects on a monthly basis.

11. DO ALL MY DONATED MONIES REACH THE PROJECT OF MY CHOICE?

1%CLUB withholds 1% of the project donations made by individuals, foundations, associations and schools. 1%CLUB charges a 5% service fee of donations from businesses. Besides, transaction costs, which depend on your payment method, are deducted. You can find an overview of the transaction costs on the tariff page transaction costs.

12. HOW DO YOU GUARANTEE MY PRIVACY?

1%CLUB takes the appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data against loss or any form of illegal processing. Passwords, for example, are encoded, so that even 1%CREW cannot access them.

13. ARE MY DONATIONS TO 1%CLUB TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

1%Club is a non-profit organisation. Therefore, donations to projects that are presented on 1%CLUB website are tax deductible. You can find more information on this on the Dutch Tax Revenue website.

1. WHO CAN REGISTER A PROJECT?

Registered CBO's or NGO's are allowed to register a project on 1%CLUB website.

2. WHAT BENEFITS DO PROJECTS HAVE BY REGISTERING?

•    Creating the web page is free, simple and fast
•    Projects can present themselves to a big audience
•    Projects can secure funds and find volunteers online
•    1%CLUB manages the donation process and transfers the acquired funds to the project on a monthly basis
•    Projects can view reports of the received donations online
•    The platform offers the opportunity to learn from and work together with other projects

3. WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS THAT A PROJECT HAS TO COMPLY WITH?

•    The project is focused on fighting poverty
•    The project is situated in a developing country
•    The project contributes to the realisation of the millennium goals
•    The project request is small and concrete. The first project request is not higher than €5,000
•    The project is a unique assignment, limited in time and means and closed with a clear project result.
•    1%CLUB is not a platform for funding general exploitation costs of organisation.
•    The project owner keeps the 1%MEMBERS informed on the progression of the project.

4. HOW DO WE GUARANTEE THE QUALITY OF THE PROJECTS?

1%CLUB performs a quality check before the projects go online. 1%CLUB applies the idea of “International Cooperation 2.0” (PDF). Thus, both 1%MEMBERS and 1%PROJECT owners actively participate in the selection and evaluation of the project. They do this by  following the projects, asking critical questions, and participating through expertise and knowledge.

5. WHAT IF IT TURNS OUT THAT A PROJECT HASN'T BEEN IMPLEMENTED PROPERLY OR HASN'T BEEN EXECUTED AT ALL?

A projects whose progress reports are not satisfactory is removed from 1%CLUB site and the funds it has already received are claimed back. The participating projects agree with this obligation by signing the placement agreement. These guidelines are also included in the general terms of business of 1%CLUB. The projects and parties involved will not be allowed to enlist a new project via 1%CLUB again.

6. HOW MANY PROJECTS CAN USE 1%CLUB WEBSITE?

There is no limit to the number of projects that can present themselves via 1%CLUB. 1%CLUB makes sure that the number of projects is in conjunction with the number of participating 1%MEMBERS. And every organisation is only allowed to enlist one project at the same time. When this project has been realised and evaluated, a new project proposal may be submitted.

7. DOES THE PRESENTATION OF PROJECTS ON THE SITE FOLLOW A LOGIC?

The most popular projects appear at the top of the project page. The project is ranked by the number of 1%MEMBERS that support it financially as well as the subtotal of funds received.

8. WHY IS THE POPULARITY OF A PROJECT DETERMINED BY DONATIONS, AND WHY ARE TIME AND EXPERTISE OF 1%MEMBERS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS MEASUREMENT?

We have chosen donations as the determining factor because a financial contribution is easy to measure. Time and expertise are not measurable exactly empirically, and can only be evaluated on estimates. Hence our decision to measure the popularity of projects in donations.

1. WHAT IS 1%CLUB?

1%CLUB is the market place for individual development projects, to which individuals and businesses optimally give 1% of their time, expertise and money, in order to structurally solve poverty.

2. WHY WE CHOOSE SMALL-SCALE PROJECTS?

Small-scale projects are executed by people directly approachable via 1%CLUB website. This fits nicely with 1%CLUB strategy which focuses on maximum transparency, directness and involvement, in other words International Cooperation 2.0. (PDF)

3. WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION 2.0?

By applying the powers of Web 2.0 in the world of development cooperation it is possible to facilitate access to information and knowledge, as well as to set up efficient, border crossing long-term collaborations. It is about bringing together people who want to improve their lives but don't have the resources, and people who want to help but do not know where to start. Also you, as 1%MEMBER, need to be able to decide yourself where and how to apply your means. Users of a system such as 1%CLUB are also responsible for its quality and end results. There is no leadership in the traditional sense of the word: YOU are the leader! Within the current structure you can find like minded people and the necessary means to make your dream come true.

1. WHAT IS THE ORGANISATION STRUCTURE OF 1%CLUB?

1%CLUB is a Foundation with a Board of five people. Moreover, 1%CLUB has a Recommendation Committee in The Netherlands. Since January 2008 1%CLUB contracts Outbox Consultancy B.V. to occupy the managerial and directorate tasks.

5. HOW MANY PEOPLE WORK FOR 1%CLUB?

At the moment six people work for 1%CLUB in Amsterdam: Anna Chojnacka, Bart Lacroix, Margreet van der Pijl, Niels Jansen, Nadia van Emmerik and Mathieu Klinger.

6. DOES 1%CLUB HAVE A CBF STAMP (WARRANT FOR DUTCH CHARITABLE INSTITUTIONS)?

1%CLUB itself doesn't initiate projects in developing countries. 1%CLUB is the platform for participating projects that are held responsible for their expenditures. Project administrators can see immediately when money is donated to their projects. Thus, the CBF warrant doesn’t really apply to a market place such as 1%CLUB. However, where possible, we follow the guidelines of the CBF warrant.

7. HOW DOES 1%CLUB GET ITS MONEY?

1%CLUB receives subsidies, monies from its partners, and the service fees of donations. 1%CLUB withholds 1% of the project donations made by individuals, foundations, associations and schools and charges a 5% service fee for donations made by businesses. 8. WHO CONTROLS THE MONEY WIHIN 1% CLUB?

All payments of donation monies to the projects are authorized collectively, with always a Board- and Staff Member present. Besides, the Board checks the money streams. From 2008, the Annual Account is checked by an external accountant of Deloitte.
